Top 5 Everyday Products That Could Increase Skin Cancer Risk

Skin Cancer Risk: Skin cancer is among the most prevalent cancers worldwide. Its most recognized cause is undue sun exposure; however, certain everyday products could be increasing the risk. Some contain chemicals or ingredients that over time damage skin cells, especially when in combination with UV exposure. Here are five products to mind.


1. Tanning Lotions and Oils

Anything that promises a sun-kissed glow contains ingredients that enhance UV penetration. Without adequate SPF protection, these can accelerate skin cell damage, cause premature skin aging, and raise the risk of skin cancers.

2. Certain Sunscreens

Ironically, some sunscreens may contain harmful chemicals, such as oxybenzone or octinoxate, that affect hormones and cause skin irritation. Sunscreen is necessary, but it is better to go for mineral-based sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.


3. Hair Dyes with Harsh Chemicals

Permanent and semi-permanent hair dyes generally have p-phenylenediamine (PPD) and other chemicals that irritate the scalp and skin. Over a period of time, usage in conjunction with UV exposure may increase skin damage risk.

4. Fragranced Body Lotions

Many body lotions use synthetic fragrances and preservatives. That include parabens that can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight. If we use this over sometime, this could lead to photoaging and ultimately increase the risk of skin cancers.

5. Old or Expired Cosmetics

Cosmetics, especially foundations and powders, can deteriorate over time, leading to bacterial growth and chemical changes. When exposed to expired cosmetics, the products tend to inflamate the skin which will lead to UV damage.

While these products do not individually cause skin cancer, chronic use coupled with intermittent exposure to the sun may increase your risk. The trick is to read your ingredient labels, opt for safer choices, and consistently give your skin a good sunblock with at least SPF 30 or higher. Now that you know the risk factors, it’s better to be safe than sorry for the long-term health of your skin!
