Before Aamir Khan shared a famous line from Laapataa Ladies with her, Kiran Rao recently recounted how she used to feel like a Laapataa Lady. One of the most talked-about movies of 2024 was Laapataa Ladies. The film, which included new performers Nitanshi Goel, Sparsh Shrivastava, and Pratibha Ranta in addition to seasoned actors Ravi Kishan and Chhaya Kadam, was Kiran Rao’s first directing project in 13 years after her debut with Dhobi Ghat. “That one line was just so compelling that I was like, I want to do this, really badly,” Rao said in a recent interview, referring to how she had been feeling like a Laapataa Lady herself and how it was a single line from the film, uttered by Aamir Khan, that inspired her to think and watch the film.

Kiran Rao recounted that while Aamir Khan was serving on the jury of a screenwriting competition, he shared a phrase from the Laapataa Ladies narrative with her during a recent roundtable conversation with RJ Rohini.

She clarified that the sentence captivated her so much that she felt compelled to participate in the initiative right away. Rao talked on how lucky she was to be given the chance to direct the movie by Aamir.

She added that she had been searching for the ideal story for her second movie for a number of years, feeling like a Laapataa Lady herself. Rao thought about that moment often, thankful for the direction it took.

Laapataa Ladies, which was co-produced by Kiran Rao’s ex-husband, superstar Aamir Khan, was well praised when it was released and was even chosen as India’s official submission for Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards. Regretfully, no nomination was obtained.

Rao promised in the same interview that her next project wouldn’t take thirteen years. She revealed that she has been occupied with her next project and is writing it right now.

Kiran teased that she has several ideas in the works, saying, “Lots of things that I have been cooking. What will boil first is unknown to me. But the audience is looking forward to what will happen next.

However, Aamir will next be seen alongside Darsheel Safary and Genelia D’Souza in Sitaare Zameen Par. According to reports, the film will be released in theaters in 2025.
