Hypothyroidism in Women: Don’t Ignore These Signs

Hypothyroidism in Women: Don’t Ignore These Signs

Hypothyroidism in Women: Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones or the thyroid gland is underactive. If you are diagnosed with hypothyroidism, it is a good idea to control your diet a bit. Some foods can make the problem worse.

Many people are unaware of their thyroid problems. According to the Indian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism, about 42 million Indians suffer from thyroid diseases.

Health experts say that hypothyroidism affects women the most. Left untreated, hypothyroidism can have serious consequences, from infertility and pregnancy complications to heart disease and depression.

Don’t Ignore These Signs

It is very important for women to get their thyroid checked regularly, at least once a year. Hypothyroidism screening involves simple blood tests that measure how well the thyroid gland is functioning. The thyroid, a butterfly-shaped gland in the neck, produces hormones (T3 and T4) that regulate metabolism, growth, and energy.

Women in India have a high prevalence of thyroid disorders. Studies suggest that one in ten adults in India has hypothyroidism. This risk increases during pregnancy due to hormonal changes.

Untreated hypothyroidism increases the risk of miscarriage, preterm birth, and growth problems in babies. Thyroid imbalances can disrupt ovulation and the menstrual cycle. Long-term untreated hypothyroidism can increase cholesterol and the risk of heart disease, and can lead to weak bones.

The American Thyroid Association recommends that women over the age of 35 get tested every five years.
