Modak Recipe with Ragi Flour: Healthy and Tasty Prasadam for Ganesh Chaturthi

Modak Recipe with Ragi Flour:

Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most celebrated festivals in India. Devotees prepare many varieties of sweets and special dishes to offer Lord Ganesha, who is lovingly called Modaka Priya – the one who loves modaks. Among all, modak is considered the most favorite prasadam of Lord Ganesha. Traditionally, modaks are made with rice flour, jaggery, and coconut. But this year, instead of the usual recipe, you can try a healthier and tastier version Modaks made with Ragi Flour.

Modak Recipe with Ragi Flour:

Ragi, also known as finger millet, is rich in calcium, iron, and fiber. It is a very healthy grain that is good for children as well as elders. By preparing modaks with ragi flour, you can enjoy a sweet that is both delicious and good for health.

Ingredients Needed

For outer covering:

Ragi flour – 2 cups

Jaggery water – 1 cup

Ghee – 5 teaspoons

For stuffing:

Fresh coconut (grated or finely chopped) – 2 cups

Jaggery – 1 cup

Cardamom powder – 1 teaspoon

Cashew pieces – 10

Preparation Method

1. Prepare the jaggery syrup:

Take a pan, add grated jaggery and one and a half cups of water. Heat until the jaggery melts completely. Filter it to remove impurities and keep aside.

2. Roast the ragi flour:

Heat a pan, add 4 teaspoons of ghee, and roast the ragi flour on low flame for 5 minutes. This helps to remove the raw smell and makes the dough soft. Now slowly add the jaggery water and mix well until it forms a soft dough. Cover it and let it rest for 5 minutes.

3. Prepare the stuffing:

In another pan, take the grated coconut and fry for 3–4 minutes until it becomes slightly dry. Add the jaggery syrup and cook until the mixture thickens. Add cardamom powder and cashew pieces. Mix well and keep aside.

4. Shaping the modaks:

Take a small portion of the ragi dough and make a ball. Flatten it gently into a small cup shape. Place one spoon of stuffing in the center. Fold the edges and bring them together to form the shape of a modak. If cracks appear, apply little water and smoothen them.

5. Steaming the modaks:

Grease a steamer plate with ghee. Place all the prepared modaks on it. Steam them for 10–15 minutes until cooked.

Ready to Serve

Your healthy and tasty Ragi Modaks are now ready. Offer them to Lord Ganesha as prasadam and later enjoy them with family. The natural sweetness of jaggery, the flavor of coconut, and the goodness of ragi make these modaks truly special.

This festive season, surprise your loved ones with this unique recipe. Instead of the usual rice flour modaks, try these ragi modaks – they are easy to prepare, look perfect in shape, and taste heavenly. Most importantly, they are nutritious, making them an ideal sweet for the whole family.
