Attention-Seeking Behavior in Children: Key Signs and Symptoms

Attention-Seeking Behavior: Most people want to be noticed, accepted, and cared for by others. But when this becomes too much, it is called attention-seeking behavior. It is a condition that is seen in both children and adults.


 

It is normal for children to want attention from their parents and others at a young age. But when it becomes too much, and when it is not received at a young age, trying too hard for it even as adults can create problems. It can affect marriage, friendships, and work.


Causes and symptoms
● Lack of love and acceptance from a young age

● Lack of self-confidence

● The idea that life only has meaning if others accept me

● Not accepting myself

● Feeling insecure in relationships

● Can’t stand it if I don’t get attention

● Personality problems such as borderline personality disorder and histrionic personality disorder

 

Symptoms in children

Crying excessively, talking while others are talking, lying, and pretending to be sick.

 

Symptoms in adults

Trying to twist things around by telling lies, getting attention and sympathy from others by saying things that haven’t happened, acting like they’re in control when talking to others, acting dramatic, and posting on social media as if they’re getting too much attention.

 

Even if you seem very confident on the outside, you may not be that way on the inside and think that you will only be valuable if you get everyone’s attention. Behave with the mindset that you just need to get attention. Many things you do to get attention become difficult for others.

 

How to solve it

In children

You should pay attention to and praise children when they do good things. Only when they speak and behave in a good way, fulfill their wishes. Do not allow them to get their needs met by making noise and threatening them. When unnecessary demands are not met many times, it will slowly change.

 

In adults

To increase self-confidence, you should not always focus only on the approval of others, but start accepting your own good qualities and abilities. You should focus on the good things. You should practice telling the truth and listening to what others have to say. For many reasons, you did not get the recognition and love you wanted from a young age from others. Fully accept that it is not your fault. Think about what good thing you can do at this moment without taking your thoughts to the past.
