ITR Filing Due Date Extended Again: Check New Deadline

ITR Filing Due Date Extended Again: Check New Deadline

ITR Filing Due Date Extended:

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has once again extended the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) for the financial year 2024-25 (assessment year 2025-26). Individual taxpayers and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) who do not require an audit now have time until September 15, 2025, instead of the earlier deadline of July 31, 2025.

ITR Filing Due Date Extended:

This extension has been announced because several issues made it difficult for taxpayers to complete the process on time. The deadline for taxpayers whose accounts need auditing remains the same at September 30, 2025.

Why Was the ITR Deadline Extended?

The decision came after many tax professionals and chartered accountants requested extra time. Here are the main reasons for the delay:

Technical Problems: The income tax e-filing portal faced issues like slow loading, login errors, and failures while uploading returns.

Data Differences: There were mismatches between the Annual Information Statement (AIS) and Form 26AS, causing confusion about tax credits.

Late Availability of Forms: Updated ITR forms and utilities were released later than expected, reducing the filing window.

New Reporting Format: The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) introduced new disclosure requirements, which increased the workload for professionals.

The CBDT considered these difficulties and officially issued a circular on May 27, 2025, giving taxpayers six more weeks to file their returns.

 Why You Should File Early

Even with the extended deadline, experts suggest not waiting until the last day. Missing the new date can result in late fees under Section 234F and interest under Sections 234A, 234B, and 234C. Taxpayers may also lose the benefit of carrying forward certain losses if they delay filing.

With this extension, taxpayers now have extra time to file accurate returns without errors. However, officials have clearly stated that no further extensions are likely. So, it is better to complete the filing process as soon as possible to avoid last-minute problems.
