In a surprising move, Warwick Davis will reprise his role as Professor Filius Flitwick in the upcoming HBO Harry Potter series. This marks a shift from HBO’s earlier stance that none of the original film cast would return. Davis, known for playing both Flitwick and Griphook in the films, will appear only as the beloved Charms teacher this time. The role of Griphook goes to Leigh Gill, known for Game of Thrones and Joker.
The show introduces fresh faces to Hogwarts. Sirine Saba joins as Professor Pomona Sprout, Richard Durden plays the ghostly Professor Binns, and Bríd Brennan is cast as Madam Pomfrey. Among students, Elijah Oshin takes on Dean Thomas, while Finn Stephens and William Nash play Slytherin students Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle.
The series boasts an impressive ensemble. Dominic McLaughlin leads as Harry Potter, with Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. John Lithgow will play Dumbledore, Nick Frost as Hagrid, and Janet McTeer as McGonagall. Other notable cast members include Paapa Essiedu as Snape, Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, and Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy.
The showrunner is Francesca Gardiner, known for her work on His Dark Materials and Killing Eve, both praised for their sharp storytelling and complex characters. Mark Mylod, acclaimed for directing Succession, will serve as both director and executive producer, promising a cinematic and emotionally layered approach. Series author J.K. Rowling returns as an executive producer, joined by longtime collaborators Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and David Heyman, the original Harry Potter film producer. With this powerhouse team, HBO is aiming to craft a faithful yet refreshed adaptation of the iconic series.
