In the recently released NIRF 2025 rankings, IIT Hyderabad (IITH) has achieved a significant milestone by overtaking IIT Guwahati (IITG) to secure the 7th spot among engineering institutes in India. This marks a major leap forward for one of India’s prominent second-generation IITs and signals a broader shift in the power dynamics among top engineering institutions.
The achievement has sparked a wave of reactions from students, alumni, and education enthusiasts. Many are calling it a “huge W for IITH,” highlighting the institute’s rapid progress in infrastructure, research output, and placements. Once seen as a relatively new entrant in the IIT ecosystem, IITH is now being acknowledged as a serious contender among the elite.
“This shows the real potential of second-gen IITs. The infra is world-class, the research culture is booming, and the placements have been exploding,” said one Reddit user reacting to the news. Another added, “When I first came here, people had a lot of complaints. But in just 3 years, many of those problems have been fixed.”
Despite the celebration, some were quick to point out that breaking into the top 5 may still be a long journey. IITs like Kanpur, Madras, Bombay, and Delhi have decades of academic legacy, vast alumni networks, and mature research ecosystems that give them an edge. “Even if Kanpur just maintains its current level, it might take Hyderabad until 2050 to truly bridge that gap,” noted one user.

This reshuffle has also led to speculation on whether IIT Hyderabad might now get a chance to conduct the JEE Advanced exam, a responsibility typically reserved for top-tier IITs on a rotational basis. While rank plays a role, the final decision depends on various logistical, administrative, and academic factors. Still, IITH’s rising stature makes it a strong candidate in future years.
As one commenter aptly said, “This is just the start; I predict a top 5 spot for IITH within the next decade.” Only time will tell, but for now, the spotlight is firmly on Hyderabad.
