Filmmaker Karan Johar has finally spoken out about his much-anticipated historical film Takht, which was shelved after years of planning. At the trailer launch of “Mirai – Super Yodha”, Johar got emotional while recalling how deeply he was invested in the project.
“I was going to make a historical film, Takht, and then due to various circumstances, including the pandemic, it was stopped,” he said. “I spent two and a half years researching and writing it. It was very heartbreaking when I couldn’t make it.”
Announced in 2018, Takht was a period saga set in the Mughal era. The film was to explore the intense rivalry between emperor Aurangzeb and his brother Dara Shukoh. It had a powerful ensemble cast featuring Anil Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Ranveer Singh, Vicky Kaushal, Alia Bhatt, Janhvi Kapoor, and Bhumi Pednekar. The screenplay was written by Sumit Roy, and the film promised grand visuals, dramatic politics, and rich storytelling.
Johar made it clear that the COVID-19 pandemic played a key role in derailing the project. Like many big-budget films, Takht became too risky to pursue during uncertain times. “Every film has its time and fate,” he said, expressing hope that he’ will get to revisit the genre in the future.

While Takht may be on pause, Johar isn’t slowing down. He’s currently distributing the upcoming fantasy-action film “Mirai – Super Yodha”, directed by Karthik Gattamneni. The film stars Teja Sajja as a warrior protecting sacred scriptures and is produced by TG Vishwa Prasad and Krithi Prasad. Even after setbacks, Johar remains passionate about storytelling. “Hopefully, in my career, I’ll get to make that film,” he concluded.
