Fresh vegetables are important for healthy meals. Many people buy vegetables daily and cook immediately, but nowadays, many prefer shopping once a week and storing vegetables at home. To keep them fresh for several days, proper storage techniques are needed. Simply keeping vegetables in the fridge is not enough. Each type of vegetable requires a different storage method. By following the right steps, vegetables and fruits can stay fresh for a longer time.

Wash Before Storing

Washing vegetables before storing helps remove dirt, dust, and bacteria. It is best to soak them briefly in water with a little salt, then rinse with clean water. After washing, let them dry completely. This prevents bacteria from growing and keeps vegetables fresh longer.


Cut and Prepare

Some vegetables have stems or roots that carry extra dirt. It is better to cut these parts before washing and storing. Wrap the vegetables in a clean cloth or paper towel and keep them in the fridge. Mushrooms should be stored in a container with a paper towel to absorb extra moisture. Vegetables that need freezing should be cooked or blanched before storing.

Allow Air Circulation

When using plastic bags, make small holes for air circulation. Root vegetables like carrots and radishes stay fresh longer this way. Vegetables such as green chilies and okra also benefit from this method.

Use Airtight Containers

During the rainy season, store vegetables in airtight containers. For vegetables like corn or peas, add a paper towel inside to absorb moisture. Ginger should be stored in a cool, dry place, covered in an airtight container or reusable plastic cover. This keeps it fresh for days and preserves its aroma.

Keep the Fridge Clean

Regularly cleaning the fridge prevents bacteria growth. Wipe shelves and drawers with baking soda solution and let them dry before placing vegetables. Avoid storing all vegetables together; separate them based on type. Bell peppers and capsicum should be kept in plastic-covered containers with paper towels to absorb moisture.

By following these simple techniques, vegetables can remain fresh, tasty, and nutritious for a longer time. Proper washing, cutting, and storage make a big difference in daily cooking.
