Kantara Release in Trouble? Theatres Announce Ban

Kantara Release in Trouble:

Rishab Shetty’s much-awaited film Kantara: Chapter 1 is set to release in theatres on October 2, 2025. Directed and acted by Rishab Shetty, the movie is the prequel to the 2022 blockbuster Kantara. While fans are eagerly waiting, reports suggest the film could face a ban in Kerala due to disagreements between distributors and theatre owners.

Kantara Release in Trouble:

According to the Film Exhibitors Union of Kerala (FEUOK), the issue is with the revenue-sharing model. The film is being distributed in Kerala by Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Prithviraj Productions. The company has asked for 55% of the profits from theatres for the first two weeks. However, theatre owners argue that the standard share for other language films is 50%, and only during the COVID-19 period was a higher percentage accepted as a special case.

FEUOK president K. Vijayakumar explained that such demands are unfair in the current situation. He also pointed out that when Malayalam films are released outside Kerala, producers often receive only 30-40% of the share. He cited examples of Malayalam movies facing losses when distributed outside the state because bigger production houses demand higher profits only when their films are screened in Kerala.

As a result, FEUOK has already announced a ban on Kantara: Chapter 1 screenings until the matter is resolved. Prithviraj Productions has not yet given an official response to the issue.

About the Film

Kantara: Chapter 1 explores ancient traditions and folklore from the Tulu region of Karnataka. The story is set in pre-colonial coastal Karnataka during the rule of the Kadamba dynasty. It focuses on the spiritual connection between humans, nature, and deities like Panjurli Daiva and Guliga Daiva.

The film stars Rishab Shetty in the lead role, along with Rukmini Vasanth and Gulshan Devaiah. Popular Malayalam actor Jayaram is also expected to play a key character.

With its rich cultural backdrop and powerful narrative, Kantara: Chapter 1 is one of the most anticipated films of 2025. However, the ongoing profit-share dispute must be resolved for Kerala audiences to experience it on the big screen.
