Broken Bone? Just paste it back in 3 Minutes: Here’s How

Broken Bone Glue: Chinese researchers have developed a medical breakthrough by creating a ‘bone glue’. Yes, it might sound funny, but now people can set their broken bones in just 3 minutes. Chinese scientists have cracked the code of repairing broken bones in minutes; the need for bone adhesive is so important in bone fractures and also in orthopedic institutions.

What is Broken Bone Glue – Bone 02?

Media sources reported that a research team in Zhejiang Province, East China, introduced the Bone-02 bone glue product on Wednesday, September 10. Lin Xianfeng, the leader and associate chief orthopedic surgeon at Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, drew inspiration to create bone glue when he saw oysters clinging to a bridge underwater. Lin explained that the glue could achieve precise fixation in just two to three minutes, even in a blood-rich environment. He also noted that as the bone heals, the body can naturally absorb the adhesive, eliminating the need for additional surgery to remove implants.

How secure is “Bone-02” than Metal Implants?

Laboratory tests verified that Bone-02 met safety and efficacy standards. Traditional treatments required surgeons to make a major incision to insert steel plates and screws, but one trial showed that doctors could finish the bone-glue procedure in less than 180 seconds, or three minutes. Researchers successfully tested the glue on more than 150 people.

The attached bones demonstrated its strength with a maximum bonding force of over 400 pounds, a shear strength of about 0.5 MPa, and a compressive strength of about 10 MPa. Researchers concluded that the product could replace conventional metal implants. They also claimed it might reduce the risk of infection and adverse reactions. Today, the market offers several bone cements and bone void fillers for fracture treatment, but none claim adhesive ability. Scientists first developed bone adhesives in the 1940s using acrylates, epoxy resins, and gelatin. However, doctors rejected them at the time because they posed biocompatibility concerns and proved unsuitable.
