DYK Which Telugu Icons Holds the Dadasaheb Phalke Award?

Recently, Malayalam superstar Mohanlal was presented with the 71st National Film Award – Dadasaheb Phalke Award, a recognition presented to those who contributed immeasurably to Indian cinema. While he now takes centre stage, it is the right occasion to turn our attention towards some of Telugu legends who were also awarded this highest honour conferred in Indian film.

The Dadasaheb Phalke Award, established in 1969, has been awarded to a few Tollywood giants who created a significant impact to the craft of both Indian cinema and generations of filmmakers and viewers.

B. N. Reddy (1974)

The first Telugu filmmaker to receive the award, B. N. Reddy will always be recognised for his work, especially his classic Malleeswari (1951). As a director and producer, Reddy’s contribution to Telugu cinema is unparalleled.

L. V. Prasad (1982)

Another trailblazer in the industry, Prasad worked in multiple languages. Prasad’s legacy is well-rounded as he directed, produced and acted. Later, he was also responsible for creating Prasad Studios, which became synonymous with Indian film production.

B. Nagi Reddy (1986)

Known for his ability to create art from commerce, Nagi Reddy ensured that timeless classics such as Maya Bazaar (1957) infused his name with recognition. His banner Vijaya Vauhini Studios provided some of the most popular entertainments in Telugu cinema during the golden age of the industry.

Akkineni Nageswara Rao (1990)

Also known as ANR, he was one of the prominent actors of Telugu cinema. From mythological roles to contemporary dramas, ANR’s contribution to Telugu cinema ultimately reshaped the expectations for acting in Indian cinema.

D. Ramanaidu (2009)

As a prolific producer, Ramanaidu’s achievement of holding a Guinness World Record for producing films in the most number of Indian languages further signifies the depth of his contribution to Indian cinema.

K. Vishwanath (2016)

Known as the storyteller, K. Vishwanath is renowned for films such as Sankarabharanam (1979) and Sagara Sangamam (1983) which are marked by their artistry, storytelling, culture, and music in distinct and creative ways.

These legends not only elevated Telugu cinema but also contributed to the Indian film industry as a whole. In recognition of Mohanlal’s most recent induction into this elite group of awardees, it is important to remember those from Tollywood that came before to pave the way, and whose legacies continue to inspire.
