Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar recently surprised many by revealing his impressive weight loss journey. At 53, he managed to shed nearly 20 kilograms. Interestingly, he did not rely on popular weight loss medicines like Ozempic but followed a disciplined lifestyle change. His method of choice was OMAD (One Meal A Day), a strict form of intermittent fasting.

Weight Loss With OMAD:

Karan shared that for years he struggled with body image issues, sudden weight gain, and even problems like hair fall and early greying. Despite exercising regularly, he felt stuck and unhappy with his health. While speaking on Raj Shamani’s podcast, he clarified that his transformation was not due to weight loss injections or medicines. Instead, OMAD helped him regain control over his body and mind.


What is OMAD?

OMAD is an eating pattern where a person consumes only one meal in 24 hours. This means fasting for long hours and eating all necessary calories in a single sitting. For Karan, it was difficult in the beginning, but over time it helped him not only lose weight but also feel more energetic and focused.

Expert Opinion on OMAD

Dr. Pal Manickam, a U.S.-based gastroenterologist, explained the benefits and risks of this diet. According to him, OMAD can simplify eating, reduce calorie intake, give the digestive system a break, and may even improve blood sugar levels and gut health. However, he warns that it is not suitable for everyone.

For women, prolonged fasting can sometimes disturb hormonal balance, leading to irregular periods or fatigue. It may also cause nutritional deficiencies since it is hard to get enough protein, vitamins, and minerals in just one meal. Dr. Manickam stressed that OMAD requires strong discipline and may not be sustainable for the long term.

More Than Just Dieting

For Karan Johar, the transformation was not only physical but also emotional. Along with OMAD, he practiced yoga and followed a mindful routine. His journey highlights that weight loss should be about long-term health and self-care, not quick fixes.

Experts advise anyone considering OMAD to first consult a doctor or nutritionist. What worked for Karan may not work for everyone, and it’s important to choose a method that suits individual health needs.
