What’s Behind China ’s Backlash Against Jun Ji-hyun’s “Tempest”?

K-Drama Line Triggers Backlash in China

A single line from the new Disney+ series Tempest has ignited fury among Viewers in China. The show’s lead, Jun Ji-hyun, plays a diplomat who questions, “Why does China prefer war? A nuclear bomb could fall near the border.” This fictional dialogue was seen by many on Chinese social media as an unfair portrayal of China, sparking widespread outrage.

Renewed Calls for K-Drama Ban

The controversy has reignited debates about the unofficial Chinese ban on South Korean entertainment. Since 2016, Chinese platforms have sharply limited Korean content following South Korea’s deployment of a US missile defense system viewed by China as a threat. Though some easing occurred recently, this incident has renewed calls among Chinese netizens to maintain the ban.

Brands and Backlash

The backlash quickly spread to Jun Ji-hyun’s endorsements. Major brands like La Mer, Louis Vuitton, and Piaget reportedly removed her ads from Chinese social media. Fans pressured companies to cut ties with the actress, blaming her for the “offensive” lines despite her agency stating that her campaigns were unrelated to the show.

Mixed Reactions Among China Fans

While many demanded boycotts, some defended Jun Ji-hyun, emphasizing that actors do not write scripts and cannot control all content. However, the dominant mood on social media was anger, with calls for accountability directed at both the actress and the production team.

Uncertain Future for K-Content in China

Despite diplomatic talks about restoring cultural ties earlier this year, the future of Korean dramas and K-pop in China remains uncertain. Recent cancellations of K-pop concerts underscore ongoing tensions. The Tempest controversy has only deepened skepticism among Chinese audiences, who have increasingly turned to local entertainment.
