Actress Poonam Pandey will no longer play Mandodari in the Ramleela at Delhi’s Red Fort. The Luv Kush Ramleela Committee removed her from the role following public outrage and concerns over religious sentiment. They made the decision to prevent controversy and uphold the sanctity of the cultural event.
The decision was confirmed in a press conference by Arjun Kumar, president of the Luv Kush Ramleela Committee. He said the move was made to respect public opinion and maintain social harmony. “We respect her feelings, but if there is division or a wrong message going out, then we must act. Poonam Pandey will not play Mandodari this time,” Kumar stated. The committee has written to Pandey informing her of the decision. A replacement will be announced soon.
Speaking to Media, Arjun Kumar emphasized that Ramleela should reflect the values and sentiments of the community. “The Ramleela should never go against public sentiment. It is a cultural celebration, and we must treat it with that responsibility.”
Subhash Goyal, Secretary of the Committee, echoed the same view. He said their aim is to keep the event controversy-free and meaningful. “We don’t want to create division. We want to send a positive message to society. If people feel uncomfortable, we must listen.” He added that several artists have expressed interest in the role. The final choice will be announced in a day or two.
