Bigg Boss 19 has been newsworthy due to its over-the-top fights, romantic entanglements, and super-sized controversies. This time it’s not about the contestant’s hijinks, it’s the Bigg Boss team creating the drama! The reality show is now facing a legal issue after reportedly using popular songs without clearance.
As per reports, two songs were played on the show without rights or credit to the original songwriters; Chikni Chameli, and Imran Khan’s Dhat Tere Ki. This has escalated to a legal case, charging the production team with a lawsuit for Rs 2 crore.
Chikni Chameli, was originally picturized on Katrina Kaif in the movie Agneepath, its one of Bollywood’s quintessential dance songs. Similarly, Imran Khan’s Dhat Tere Ki is also a household favorite to fans of Bollywood songs. Both of these songs are copyright protected and both usages would put the producers in severe breach of intellectual property.
The situation raises questions about how a respected production could flop on music rights-a step that is commonplace in TV and film. Legal analysts opine that if the charges are valid, the show’s producers could be liable for large damages, and possibly more restrictions in future episodes.
At the very least, the scandal has intensified buzz around Bigg Boss 19. Known as a popular ground for scandals, the show seems to portray as much interest outside the screen, as it does onscreen. Fans are eager to see how the show makers respond to the situation and if it affects the current season.
While the contestants continue to entertain viewers with their onscreen performances, the real drama may soon be shifting to the legal side.
