Deadly Stampedes in 2025: Joy Turns Into Mourning Across India

Deadly Stampedes in 2025: In the past few months India has witnessed several stampede incidents in this year. This stampede situations are very alarming for all the state and centre security and police departments that there is some gap in crowd management and public safety. From religious gatherings to political events and even celebratory rallies, thousands of people came together. For all this there is only one reason where the stampede situation arises, because of poor planning and uncontrollable crowd this turns out from joyous occasions into devastating tragedies.

Let’s now look at the deadly stampedes recorded in 2025:

1. In the start of the year, on January 8 in Tirupati, almost six devotees lost their lives in a stampede. The main reason for this stampede was people rushing to get vaikunta darshan tickets in queue. The sacred atmosphere of devotion turned into chaos as people pushed forward in desperation, overwhelming the arrangements in place.

2. Just weeks later, on January 28 in Prayagraj, the holy Kumbh Mela witnessed one of the deadliest incidents of the year. A massive crowd gathered on Mauni Amavasya, one of the most auspicious days for bathing in the Ganga. But as lakhs of devotees surged ahead, authorities failed to control the flow, resulting in a stampede that claimed 30 lives.

3. The trend of tragedies did not stop at religious congregations. On June 4 in Bengaluru, celebrations for RCB’s historic IPL trophy victory turned fatal. Overjoyed fans poured into the streets for a victory rally, but the uncontrolled crowd surge killed 11 people. What should have been a day of pride for the city instead left it mourning.

4. The most recent and deadliest stampede occurred on September 27 in Karur, at actor-turned-politician Vijay’s rally. A staggering crowd of more than 27,000 gathered, and delays in the event triggered restlessness. In the resulting chaos, 39 people lost their lives and over a hundred sustained injuries.

Looking at these four incidents this makes us understand the harsh reality of how weak is India in controlling huge crowd and there is lack of proper safety planning from government and also from the organizers. Without immediate reforms, large gatherings will continue to risk turning celebrations into catastrophes.
