In India, the Tulasi plant, also known as holy basil, is considered sacred. Beyond its religious significance, Tulasi has many medicinal properties. Ayurvedic experts say that consuming Tulasi helps balance the three doshas – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha – in the body. It is also highly beneficial for improving immunity and overall health. Tulasi is rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytochemicals like eugenol, which support the body’s defense system.


Health Benefits of Holy Basil:

One of the easiest ways to use Tulasi for health is through Tulasi Kashayam, an Ayurvedic herbal drink. This decoction is made by boiling Tulasi leaves with other natural ingredients such as ginger, black pepper, cinnamon, and licorice. Drinking this herbal tea can help prevent infections, especially during the rainy season, when bacteria and viruses spread easily. Tulasi Kashayam is also useful during winter to relieve common cold, cough, and throat pain. It not only reduces symptoms but also strengthens the immune system, protecting the body from seasonal illnesses.

Tulasi Kashayam can be prepared at home easily. Take a glass of water and add 5-7 Tulasi leaves, a small piece of ginger, 3-4 black peppercorns, and a pinch of cinnamon. Boil until the water reduces by half. Once slightly cooled, you may add a little honey for taste. Drinking this Kashayam once or twice a day is beneficial for both children and older adults.
