Skin Differences Between the Rich and Poor: Online Discussion Heats Up

Skin Differences Between the Rich and Poor: Online Discussion Heats Up

Skin Care: Recently on Reddit, a topic sparked conversation and debate about why it seems that wealthy people have skin that is bright, clear and glowing. One user wondered whether it is primarily due to their diet, reduced stress, having air conditioning or being able to afford premium treatments. The user also speculated whether it is possible for a middle-class person to try to achieve the same skin appearance after becoming wealthy.

Skin Care/Lifestyle/Environmental Factors

A number of users made lifestyle distinctions as a contributor to the appearance of skin. More specifically, comments suggested less sun exposure because of their ability to drive everywhere, lower stress levels during childhood development, and a more varied, nutritious diet. Several users also touched on background and upbringing, suggesting that if you grow up pampered and distressed, it can allow for healthier skin down the line.

Access to Treatments/Skincare

Reddit users also noted that the wealthy often have access to expensive skincare treatments like laser treatments, microneedling, expensive products, etc., which may improve appearance. However, while these treatments may help conditions, such treatments aren’t a replacement for genetics, or balanced hormones.

Genetics: The Underlying Factor

Most users agreed that genetics play the dominant role in skin quality. Beyond inherited skin traits, some pointed out that beauty standards in partner selection may amplify these effects, as children inherit favorable genetic traits from both parents. Cooking methods and diet- such as steaming or baking and using certain fats- were also cited as minor influences on skin health.

The Bottom Line

The conversation made clear that while affluence can purchase the tools and lifestyle for better skin, wealth is not the only factor. Genetics, hormonal levels, and stress levels are important, and these factors have been seen to influence skin quality between wealthy individuals. Likewise, individuals with less affluence can have good skin also, depending on those same factors. In summary, glowing skin is not a given with wealth.
