Opinion piece: A dull state of Telugu cinema this year

Tollywood: Telugu cinema went through a dull period at the box-office this year. Not a lot of stars arrived on the big screen, but there were enough big releases that released among high expectations but failed to reach the figures of previous year.

Lack of Big Hero films

Among the Star heroes only Pawan Kalyan had two releases this year, “Hari Hara Veeramallu” and “They Call Him ‘OG’ while the former became a flop the latter is presently standing at the number one position in box-office collection.

Ram Charan

Ram Charan joined hands with Tamil director Shankar and released ‘Game Changer’ this year but that film became a major disaster.

Other stars

Among the Senior Heroes Venkatesh released ‘Sankranthiki Vasthunnam’ which became the biggest hit of a regional Telugu cinema, and Bala Krishna released ‘Daaku Maharaj’, which broke even at the Box-office.

Medium range Heroes

Among these Heroes, Nani and Teja Sajja films have become successful at the box-office. Vijay Devarakonda opened well with ‘Kingdom’ but did not finish well. ‘Kuberaa’ and ‘Thandel’ crossed the 100 crore figure.

Overall there are nine films that crossed the 100 crore mark at the box office. Which is a disappointing figure for box-office to become glorious.

Delays in Production

There are many films in the production phase, Prabhas has two films on sets and Mahesh Babu has Rajamouli’s film on sets, Ntr is shooting with Prashanth Neel. All these films are huge films, which means huge number of working days, which means huge budgets and logical constraints.

Strike

There was also a major strike by workers unions in the Industry, daily wage workers demanded a hike in their salaries and went on strike for more than a month which hampered the production formalities.

Emotional disconnection

The major issue with all the present movies is they are going in different routes in terms of content, there is no emotional connection whatsoever, and they are trying to imitate previous blockbuster films.

Writing

This is due to lack of concentration in writing, the ideas are good in the starting stage but whenever they are developed into the screenplay those are being diluted to cater the adrenaline rush factor but many of them are falling flat on the edit tables.
