Diwali Online Scams: The Telangana Cyber Security Bureau has issued a public advisory warning citizens about online scams during the festive season. According to officials, cyber fraudsters are exploiting the Diwali shopping rush with fake websites, phishing links, and misleading advertisements promising huge discounts on gadgets and gifts.
390 victims – ₹8.5 lakh Loss in Telangana:
Victims are often tricked into sharing banking details or installing malware through deceptive links and apps, leading to financial loss. From 1st October till now, nearly 390 victims have been reported, with a total loss of around ₹8.5 lakh, mainly through fake advertisement URLs.
How are Scammers Using Tech during Diwali?
Scammers typically create fake e-commerce websites and ads that mimic trusted brands. They send phishing links and APK files via WhatsApp, SMS, or Telegram to install malware and steal OTPs and banking credentials. Alarmingly, some scammers even use fake customer care numbers to gain remote access and users’ trust.

Authorities have advised the public to only shop from verified websites and apps, avoid clicking unknown links or installing APK files, and use official customer care numbers from brand websites. Any suspicious activity should be reported immediately to the cyber cybersecurity authorities via 1930 or www.cybercrime.gov.in
