A phone sparking or smoking during Diwali can be dangerous. Do not panic. Immediately perform these five important steps. Your prompt action can help prevent a big accident.
Immediately walk away from the device. Maintain a distance of 2-3 meters. Inform others to move away also. Do not attempt to pick it up or throw it. The toxic smoke and burning debris can cause bodily harm.
Never pour water on lithium-ion battery fire. This can make the explosion worse. Use sand, soil, or a dry cloth to smother any flames. This will cut off the fire’s oxygen supply.
Remove any flammable materials surrounding the phone. Front curtains, clothes, firecrackers, and anything else that could burn should be moved quickly away. This will prevent sparks from igniting a larger fire. The goal is to isolate the hazard.
Burning batteries release harmful and toxic fumes. These fumes can be harmful to your lungs. Open all windows and doors immediately. Use a fan to blow all the air outside.
Do not toss the burnt phone in a bin. Instead, let it cool down and rest for hours, inside a metal container. After it is cooled, it can be taken to an e-waste center. This way, you can avoid damage to the environment and avoid further risk happening in the future.
Use another phone to take pictures or videos. While doing so, stay 15-20 feet away to capture the device that is smoking or on fire. This could help you with a warranty claim if you plan to request for the company to replace the burnt device you had.
