Air quality has become increasingly unhealthy since Diwali. The AQI measuring fine particulate air pollution has reached values over 500 in many regions. The winter weather will further exasperate this issue. The air in your home must be cleaned, and you should not have to purchase an expensive home purifier to do so.
Do not burn scented candles or incense (or use air fresheners) in your home. They create smells that are soothing and pleasant, however, along with the comforting aromas, they also introduce harmful chemicals that add to the indoor air pollution. Therefore, it is best to just avoid burning them at all and help keep the air inside your home cleaner.
Do keep all doors and windows closed to avoid any outside air pollution entering your home. Use either your window or split Air Conditioner to ventilate your space and circulate the indoor air inside the room. A running Air Conditioner will always feel more comfortable than the staleness of closed, unventilated indoor air. The polluted outside air will still remain outside.
Be sure the exhaust fans in your kitchen and bathroom are put to use. Exhaust fans pull stale air completely outside the interior of the home, and also expel polluted air as well while creating a flow of clean indoor air. Run the exhaust fans for one or two hours each day. You will be surprised at how much cleaner your air quality will become.
Never smoke cigarettes inside your home, as the smoke fills the inside of the room with small, toxic, particle laden chemicals that create an extreme indoor air pollution. Always smoke outdoors and as far from any windows or doors as possible so the smoke does not enter back inside the home. Air pollution is dangerous enough without considering second hand smoke exposure to every individual of your family.
Indoor plants are a fun and easy way to liven up your home. Pick up some plants, such as an Areca Palm or a Snake Plant. The Peace Lily and Money Plant are also incredibly helpful in cleaning the air in your space. They remove serious toxins in the air naturally, and you can find these plants at your local nursery.
Heavy cotton or jute curtains are often inexpensive and can be hung on your doors and windows. They, too, will collect dust or pollution from entering your living space and help your indoor air quality tremendously.
Check under your AC for a dirty filter blowing polluted air in every crevice; if not cleaned regularly, this can make indoor air pretty nasty. Clean AC filters, in some models, have a self-cleaning mode. Check your model or your guidelines! The key is proper maintenance of your cooling appliances.
