Why Maddock Horror Comedy Universe Isn’t Working as Expected

The Maddock Horror Comedy Universe (MHCU) has become popular with its shared films, but several viewers perhaps feel something is lacking when viewing those films. While the films have a strong cast, familiar faces, specific comedic moments, and other things, the films sometimes feel as though they are not cohesive in execution. The main problem is not with the acting, the jokes, or the horror; it is with a lack authenticity. Instead of feeling like separate films that work together, they feel like films created to check boxes, focusing on filming more films in a cinematic universe than making good movies.

Tick-Box Cinema

MHCU films seem to check specific boxes: a cameo in each film to “build the universe,” a catchy item song for mass appeal, and joke heavy on memes and an aspect of poking fun towards a Gen Z audience, that might catch the attention of some but do not serve the plot. Encountering these box-checked aspects makes the films seem, well, cinematic and mechanical. Fans seem to remark that absolutely nothing from these films feels like it was made organically; everything seems to theatrically purpose of adding to the film. The filmmaking almost feels secondary to fulfilling the universe.

Maddock Horror Comedy Universe: Rushing Towards a Crossover

Clearly, Maddock is making an “Avengers-type” crossover, with all characters included in a single flash, big-money project. This is complicated by the fact that, unlike a series of Marvel films that built over decades of source material, Maddock is creating completely original characters and storylines, without any backup. Yet, there is a trade-off to this approach: films within the studio are often lacking in quality of storytelling, since everything is focused on universe continuity and creating a regular turnaround for releases.

Quality vs. Profit

Simply put, MHCU seems be more profit baiting strategy than concern for artistic integrity. Maddock accepts that some of the films in his universe may not be good, wagering that he will make it back (financially) at some point with a large crossover event. Perhaps this model works ideally; but based on the public response, it is clear that expect consecutively debacle formulaic universe building substitutes for good narratives, and until these films offer a better balance in artistic endeavor with profit-driven strategy, MHCU continues to miss with audiences.
