Konkona Sen: Deepika Padukone’s unexpected exit from the much-anticipated film Kalki has recently emerged as one of the most talked-about stories in Bollywood. There were reports-some suggested Deepika wanted to work eight hours a day on the film while others said she was unhappy with a significantly smaller role in the sequel.
In her defense, Deepika stated that many male counterparts, in fact, superstars and mothers of such stars in the industry, too, have similar limitations, which hardly ever becomes news concerning them; hence the unnecessary scrutiny faced by women in cinema against double standards.
Currently, actress and filmmaker Konkona Sen Sharma is supporting Deepika. Speaking with Filmygyan, Konkona has praised Deepika as a “voice of progress” and raised the issue of equitable working conditions within the film industry.
Konkona said about Deepika:’ Whenever I hear Deepika’s name, I think she stands for progress. We need more people like her. I think the industry should operate on some full-fledged parameters-one cannot work for 14 to 15 hours a day. A 12-hour turnaround time should be encouraged. Technical crews should have at least one day off in a week, definitely.’
Konkona stressed that it is necessary to ensure equity on set, as men operate under impaired legislation by reporting late or by working long hours while women carry a sense of obligation of not being personally responsible as they show how committed they are. “Women shouldn’t have to leave their children behind for continuing to work long hours”.
