Stranger Things 5 Fan Theory: As anticipation mounts for the fifth season of Stranger Things, the fans wonder about how the emotional love triangle between Mike Wheeler, Eleven, and Will Byers will be handled. The latest fan theory making waves is that of cleverly and era-appropriately providing the resolution in the form of a fake dating plot.
Beginning with an audacious proposal – that the show might actually have both Mileven and Byler happen – this theory was put forth by a fan on Reddit.
The theorist explains that Stranger Things 5 will take place in Hawkins, Indiana, in 1987, where any relationship between two same-sex people would be looked upon with disdain in society. The fan notes that only a person of queer nature and a woman in living Indiana, being openly gay could cause devastating repercussions, getting such realization embedded in the consciousness of characters like Will.
In this case, Eleven recognizes that Will is in love with Mike and tries to help them to get together. To protect Will and Mike from judgment in their conservative hometown, they resort to a “lavender marriage” with Will-the-mike-and-Eleven trio pretence of dating. They all would be with Mike and Will-well-known by their close friends but unknown to society.
While it is probably an understatement for the Duffer Brothers to use such intricately woven premises, it has resonated with many fans as a well-considered and period-sensitive way to pay homage to both ships while incorporating the state of affairs in 1980s America. Regardless of whether or not it finds its way into canon, this notion has truly recharged and reinvigorated some fire in the fandom.
