NIA Takes Over Delhi Blast Investigation: All About India Top Anti Terror Agency

India Top Anti Terror Agency:

A massive car blast in Delhi on November 10 claimed at least 12 lives and caused panic across nearby areas. The case has now been handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), India’s top anti-terror body known for handling major terror and security-related crimes.

India Top Anti Terror Agency:

The NIA was created after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks in 2008, which highlighted serious gaps in India’s security system. To improve coordination and speed in handling terrorism-related crimes, the government passed the National Investigation Agency Act in 2008. The agency officially started on December 31, 2008, under the leadership of then Home Minister P. Chidambaram.

Mandate and Powers

The NIA investigates crimes that affect India’s sovereignty and security, such as terrorism, illegal arms smuggling, and fake currency cases. It can act anywhere in India without needing approval from state governments. After a 2019 amendment, the agency also gained the power to probe cases that occur outside India if they involve Indian citizens or interests.

The agency uses advanced forensic tools and coordinates with international bodies like Interpol and the United Nations. It maintains a national terror database and works closely with state police forces.

Structure and Leadership

Operating under the Ministry of Home Affairs, the NIA is based in New Delhi with eight branch offices across India. It has around 1,900 officers and staff from the IPS, IRS, and other police services. Since 2017, Y.C. Modi has been serving as the Director General.

Case Handling and Success Rate

The Union Home Ministry assigns cases to the NIA, and state governments can also recommend them. The agency can arrest suspects, conduct searches without warrants, and collect evidence directly.

Since its formation, the NIA has registered more than 700 cases and achieved verdicts in 147. Major cases include the arrest of Yasin Bhatkal in the 2013 Indian Mujahideen case, the 26/11 conspiracy probe, and the 2024 Rameswaram café blast.

Current Situation

As of November 2025, the NIA is handling around 500–550 ongoing cases. With the Delhi blast now under its investigation, the agency faces another big challenge to prove its efficiency in cracking terrorism cases quickly and effectively.
