Dry and cracked lips are one of the most common winter problems. As temperatures drop, the cold air steals away moisture from the skin, making lips rough and painful. Many believe it happens only due to weather, but doctors say vitamin deficiency can also be a major reason.
According to dermatologists, the lips are more sensitive than other parts of the body. They lack oil glands, so they dry out faster when humidity drops. In some cases, cracked lips may signal a lack of Vitamin B12, which plays an important role in keeping the skin healthy.
When your body has less Vitamin B12 than required, it leads to dry skin, irritation around the mouth and lips that crack easily. This vitamin is also vital for red blood cell formation and nerve function. A long term deficiency may cause fatigue, memory issues or even anemia.
To prevent chapped lips during winter, experts suggest maintaining good hydration. Drinking enough water and eating foods rich in Vitamin B12 can make a big difference. Fish like salmon, tuna, and sardines are rich in Vitamin B12. You can also include shellfish, eggs, milk and curd in your diet for better results.
Dermatologists also advise using lip balm regularly. Look for balms that contain shea butter, coconut oil or beeswax. Avoid licking your lips, as it only makes them drier. Applying a thin layer of petroleum jelly before bed helps keep lips soft and protected overnight.
A simple tip to remember if your lips are frequently cracking even after using balm, it’s time to check your vitamin levels. Healthy food, proper care and good hydration can keep your lips smooth all through winter.
