A Chinese man’s death followed weight-loss surgery that was meant to impress his girlfriend’s parents. The man, Li Jiang, 36, had dealt with obesity for a number of years, and his story illustrates the risks that can accompany elective surgery. It also illustrates the pressures of societal beauty ideals.
Li Jiang is a pseudonym; he weighed more than 134 kg and was 174 cm tall. Li was in a serious relationship for the first time and intended to marry his girlfriend, but wanted to look healthier in front of her parents, and opted for a gastric bypass for quick results.
Li entered the Ninth People’s Hospital on September 30. Doctors performed the gastric bypass on October 2. The procedure itself was technically successful. Li recovered in the ICU before being transferred to a general ward.
Li’s health deteriorated rapidly on October 4, and he stopped breathing early on the morning of October 5. He was taken back to the ICU where emergency treatment was performed. Unfortunately, Li died on October 5 from respiratory failure.
Li had several known medical problems, including metabolic syndrome, a severe weight gain disorder. He was also diagnosed with hypertension. Furthermore, he had fatty liver at one time. He was a heavy snorer in his sleep.
The family of Li Chen raised significant issues. They questioned the thoroughness and quality of the preoperative assessment. They also questioned the timing of the postoperative management. The hospital had noted he met all clinical criteria. They stated his need for emergency care was immediate and acute. The causes of an unexpected and sudden decline remains unknown.
The family and hospital will await various answers. The family will report and ask the local Health Commission to do an autopsy on the body. The report will confirm the exact issues of the cause of death. The hospital will state they will take responsibility and follow the report and the law.
This incident caused intense discussion on social media. A social media comment noted that all surgeries carry the risk of death, especially if there are underlying health issues. Doctors always try their best, but they cannot predict outcomes. Another comment suggested that any weight loss should be done naturally. They added that a gastric sleeve is still a significant surgery.
