Watching Pirated Movies: Watching movies online has become very common, but many people are still confused about what is legal and what is not. According to Indian law, downloading or sharing pirated movies is a serious offense. However, just streaming a movie online without saving it permanently is treated differently.

The Copyright Act, 1957, clearly states that anyone who downloads, copies, or distributes pirated content can be punished. But the Bombay High Court has clarified that simply viewing or streaming pirated content for personal use, without downloading or sharing it, is not a criminal offense for the viewer. The real crime lies with the websites that host and distribute these illegal copies.

Legal Consequences for Piracy:
While authorities mainly target the creators and distributors of pirated content, strict punishments exist for anyone who downloads or shares such material:

– Imprisonment: Up to 3 years, and up to 7 years for repeat or large-scale offenses.
– Fines: From ₹50,000 to several lakhs, depending on how serious the violation is.
– Website Blocking: Regularly, when there is a notice about any pirated movie sites, the Courts order to block those Internet Service Providers (ISPs) that host those pirated movies.

– Civil Damages: Copyright owners can file a case and claim money from the offenders.

Viewing vs. Downloading: The Key Difference
The law makes a clear difference between watching and copying: Downloading a pirated movie is an illegal and punishable offense. As per the reports, streaming the pirated copy is not treated as an offense until you create a copy for yourself. However, the website that hosts the pirated movie is breaking the law.

How are authorities fighting Piracy?
The government is working to reduce online piracy through several measures, which include blocking those sites that run regularly and also updating laws, and stopping recording inside cinema halls. Citizens can also help by reporting cybercrimes, including piracy, through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal started by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
