According to Dr Swarup Swaraj Pal, a senior heart and transplant surgeon from Mumbai, heart blockage usually develops because of common lifestyle habits—such as eating unhealthy foods, high stress, sitting for long hours, smoking, or not keeping cholesterol and blood sugar under control. Some early symptoms may appear, like chest tightness, shortness of breath, constant tiredness, or fast heartbeats. A few people may even experience swelling in the legs or fainting. But in many cases, there are no symptoms, which makes regular heart check-ups extremely important.
Doctors say that early awareness and small lifestyle changes can make a real difference. Treatment for blockage usually includes healthier eating, prescribed medicines, and in some cases angioplasty or bypass surgery. But preventing the problem in the first place is always safer.
1. Choose healthier foods every day
Include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and foods rich in omega-3 like fish. These support better cholesterol levels.
2. Reduce packaged and deep-fried foods
These raise bad cholesterol and speed up plaque buildup.
3. Move your body daily
At least 45 minutes of walking, cycling, swimming, gym exercise, or yoga helps improve blood circulation.
4. Stop smoking completely
Smoking damages artery walls and increases blockage risk. Quitting brings major heart benefits.
5. Manage health conditions
Keep blood pressure, cholesterol, and sugar levels under doctor supervision.
6. Lower your stress levels
Relaxation, meditation, and breathing practices help reduce strain on the heart.
7. Go for routine heart screenings
Regular tests help detect silent problems before they become dangerous.
