Harvard Study: Sleeping With Lights On May Increase Heart Disease Risk

Heart Disease Risk:
A new study from Harvard University has revealed a worrying fact about our daily habits. Many people sleep at night with a small light on in their room. But researchers say even a little artificial light at night can be harmful to the heart.

Heart Disease Risk:

According to the study, night-time light exposure puts extra pressure on the brain and blood vessels. This can slowly increase the chances of heart disease and stroke. Scientists say this risk is much higher than what was previously known.

Researchers studied 466 healthy people for around 10 years. They used advanced brain scanning methods to understand how night-time light affects the body. They discovered two major problems.

First, the brain shows more stress when there is artificial light in the room at night. When the brain feels stressed, it sends signals to the body that create inflammation.

Second, this inflammation causes swelling in the arteries. Over time, this can make the arteries stiff and narrow. When arteries become hard, the risk of heart attack and stroke increases.

The most shocking part of the study is the numbers. People who are exposed to more light at night have *up to 35% higher risk of heart disease* within five years. This risk exists even after considering other factors like pollution, noise, or lifestyle habits. The danger is higher for people living in busy or low-income areas where outdoor lights are more common.

Night-time light can also disturb sleep. It affects the body’s natural sleep-wake cycle, leading to poor sleep quality and insomnia. Previous studies have also linked bright night-time light to a higher chance of Alzheimer’s disease in older adults.

Experts say reducing light pollution is very simple if we follow a few steps. Keep your bedroom as dark as possible at night. Avoid using phones, TVs, or tablets before sleep. Use thick curtains or a sleep mask to block street lights from entering the room.

Doctors warn that artificial light at night is not just a small problem. It is becoming a serious health risk. Taking small steps to sleep in darkness can protect your heart and improve your overall health.
