The comments of a well-known filmmaker SS Rajamouli made a few days back during a discussion. Provoked strong reactions from the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). The filmmaker’s comments upon Hinduism and worship are highly debated at the moment. And a felt need arose within the organization to actually come out with an official statement.
The VHP thinks that his comments have suggested that anybody who doesn’t do or take part in traditional rites would still be a Hindu. Practically, such definition contradicts what Hindu bhakti and long-standing religious practice are all about. Evils in his comments include the loud petulance of senior VHP dignitaries condemning his remarks on the grounds that they are “incorrect” and “misleading” to the public.
The VHP leadership stated that public figures-most importantly. The ones in films to whom audiences are numerous-are highly responsible when voicing their opinions in issues that touch deep matters of faith and culture. They cautioned that simple or distorted interpretations by such persons on religious bases in the public forum would bring about great confusion among believers.
Admitting that devotion, discipline, and respect for rituals make up the identity of a Hindu. The organization said that any attempts to redefine that will undermine cultural integrity.
Political Leaders React
As soon as the controversy broke wide open, a few politicians seemed to come to the fray. While some condemned him as having grossly misunderstood the subject and urged public figures not to make statements which would hurt religious sentiments, others called for balanced discussions that shouldn’t be politicized.
