Allu Arjun Films: Allu Arjun’s rise in popularity has not been an overnight thing in Kerala. His early films came when there wasn’t much youthful vibrancy in Malayalam cinema, especially in music and romance. The songs of his films that were dubbed into Malayalam were already chart-toppers in Kerala, exposing Malayali audiences for the first time to the style of Allu Arjun. The looks, the effortless dancing, and the slick stunt work that he offered looked all fresh compared to what local cinema had to offer somewhere around the year 2000.
The early 2000s were transitional times in Mollywood. The legendary stars-Mohanlal and Mammootty, Jayaram, and Suresh Gopi–were still playing the younger roles, but the audience was finding it very difficult to relate to these portrayals. Dileep handled most of the youth-oriented roles, yet even those were familiar to a mold. While Prithviraj had come, he initially carried a screen persona that was, according to many, a tad unlikeable.
This vacuum allowed Telugu and Tamil dubbed films to flourish on Malayalam television. Malayalam youth, especially the older millennials, gravitated toward younger, energetic heroes. Vijay became the relatable neighbourhood boy who still wooed the glamorous heroine. Allu Arjun became the aspirational figure-fighting fit, stylish, charming, and effortlessly cool. He embodied a kind of youthfulness that Kerala cinema struggled to produce at that time.
While long established for storytelling, Malayalam cinema has constantly grappled with plausible rom-coms. Youthful flirtation, playful chemistry, and modern romance have infrequently come across as natural on-screen. As a result, charming romantic heroes have been short in supply. Allu Arjun perfectly filled that void. His movies encompassed electrifying dance, spirited romance, and snazzy action-all genres rarely intertwined in Malayalam films of that epoch.
Today too, Kerala finds rom-coms grievously in need; thus, the impact created by Allu Arjun stood to test of time. His films presented the Malayali audience with the youthful charm and aspirational energy they weren’t getting from their own industry, thereby making him an everlasting favourite across the state.
