A Journey Through Rejections: Anupam Kher’s Open Letter to His Younger Self

As the caption read, “An Open Letter To My Young Self…#SwipeLeft,” It started with a picture of an envelope with the text “To Anupam From Anupam” and a black-and-white photo of his younger self. He went down memory road, recalling how he used to sit in a little room in Shimla, practice dialogues he believed no one would ever hear, and stare at the mirror. He thought back to his earlier, almost unattainable goals of Bollywood, theater, and fame. But he confidently told himself, “‘Impossible’ is only a term you haven’t conquered yet.”

“Life is going to surprise you. The rejections, the failures, the moments of self-doubt—they will become the stepping stones of your story. You’ll cry over lost roles, but one day, you’ll laugh at those tears because they’ll lead you to something better. Like Saaransh—your first film as an old man when you were just 28,” he further added.

As humorous as it may sound, Kher said that life puts you to the test and then rewards you when you least expect it.  reflecting on his vulnerability with his trademark wit he said, “Oh, and one more thing—about the whole hair situation, don’t worry. You’ll still have swag!”

Finally, regardless of whether it starts at age 40 or 60, he emphasized the beauty of life, which never stops changing and evolving.
