Jr NTR approaches Delhi High Court. The Tollywood star Junior NTR has filed a case against the various platforms of social media and e-commerce sites for misusing his personality rights before the High Court at Delhi. It was alleged in the petition that so many accounts and pages have put contents and pictures before the public under his name and likeness without any authorization.
According to Junior NTR, this very exploitation confounds the fans but also destroys the brand value and personal identity of the star.
The petition is being filed through Senior Counsel Sai Deepak, renowned for his high-profile cases involving digital rights and online platforms. Counsel for Junior NTR argued that the unauthorized content circulating on these platforms infringes upon Junior NTR’s right of publicity and personality rights available in law in India.
The matter was taken before the Bench of Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora.
The bench of Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora dealing with the matter recognized the need for some sort of framework to protect the identity of the celebrity in a digitalized world. The Court took cognizance of the growing possibility of misuse of names of celebrities for purposes other than business, misinformation, and fake endorsements through social media.
In a landmark judgment, the Delhi High Court directed major social media platforms to take immedialy all actions necessary with respect to those accounts and pages infringing Junior NTR’s personality rights. The Court also ordered all such social media to review and take down any content that unlawfully exploited the name, image, or any other likeness of the actor.
After that, the action shall be taken in the manner provided under the IT Rules 2021.
This would be in accordance with the IT Rules 2021, as termed by the Court, for redress and content moderation without further delay. To add, no e-commerce sites must sell any kind of products or promotional material using the name and identity of Junior NTR without prior approval.

This is perceived as a strong step towards strengthening the rights of celebrities in the online domain. Therefore, Junior NTR’s petition indeed seeks to protect Junior NTR’s identity and also sets a very important precedent for safeguarding digital personality rights in India.
