Why Mumbai police, Why not Deva…?

Mumbai Police or Deva: Shahid Kapoor’s latest release Deva is a remake of Prithviraj Sukumaran’s psychological thriller film, Mumbai Police. For its Hindi remake, the climax has been changed. Shahid Kapoor stars as ACP Dev Ambre, and Pooja Hegde plays Diya Sathaye in Rosshan Andrews’ film Deva. Pavail Gulati, Pravesh Rana, Kubbra Sait, Girish Kulkarni, and Manish Wadhwa all play prominent roles in the film.


Deva was theatrically released on 31 January 2025, with mixed reviews from critics, with appreciation for Kapoor’s performance, cinematography, and editing, However, the film was negatively impacted by criticism of the story narration and climax.

 


Portrayal of lead role in Mumbai police:
Antony Moses(Prithviraj Sukumaran) an ACP in Kochi suffers partial memory loss after a car accident just as he uncovers the identity of his friend Aaryan John Jacob’s murderer. Aaryan a fellow officer had been killed during a gallantry awards ceremony and before the accident Antony had been on a call with his brother-in-law Farhan Aman revealing he had solved the case. As Antony regains his memories he uncovers a shocking truth: his own guilt in Aaryan’s murder. Antony had been in a secret relationship with a male flight attendant and when Aaryan discovered this their argument led to Antony’s irrational fear that Aaryan would expose him. In his paranoia Antony premeditated Aaryan’s murder setting up a remote-controlled rifle to kill him during the ceremony. Ultimately, Antony realizes his own role in the crime and despite his memory loss he surrenders to the police accepting responsibility for his past actions.

 

 

 

Portrayal of Lead role in Deva:
Dev (Shahid Kapoor) is a troubled police officer haunted by the death of his father and plagued by deep emotional turmoil which fuels his explosive behavior. After an accident leaves him with memory loss Dev uncovers dark secrets about his past including his role as a mole for a powerful politician and his involvement in the murder of a notorious gangster. His friendship with Rohan who discovered his secret takes a tragic turn when Dev mistakenly believes Rohan intends to expose him leading him to kill his friend in a fit of rage. As Dev’s memories resurface he grapples with guilt and regret questioning his morality and the nature of justice while the film delves into themes of loyalty, redemption and the consequences of impulsive actions.

 

 

 

In this both films the director has changed the climax and tired an new element with mix of mass and thug element in the story telling which made an huge difference between Mumbai police and deva. Prithviraj’s character is designed in an grounded and in natural way to the regional audiences.
