In the year 1995, when Shah Rukh Khan got the offer to play the character of Raj Malhotra in this film, he rejected it. He believed that he would not be able to play this role properly. He was 30 years old at that time. While the character of Raj in the film was a college-going youth, who should have been 18 years old. Shah Rukh felt that he would not be able to play the character of this age properly. Apart from this, he was a fan of action films and did not consider himself fit for a romantic role.
But the makers of the film did not give up. They went to Shah Rukh Khan again and again and convinced him to play the role of Raj. Finally, Shah Rukh decided to work on this film and it proved to be the biggest film of his life. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge had a budget of only Rs 4 crore, but it earned Rs 102 crore at the box office and became the highest grossing film of 1995. This film gave Shahrukh Khan a new identity and established him in the industry as the king of romance.
Interestingly, the makers of the film wanted Hollywood actor Tom Cruise to be taken for this role, but due to lack of budget, they could not afford him. After this, they contacted Saif Ali Khan, but Saif also rejected this offer. After this, this role was given to Shahrukh Khan, which proved to be a milestone for his career.
