At WAVES 2025, Aamir Khan highlighted this aspect, expressing concern with the small difference between theatrical and OTT release times, to his opinion the cause of destruction of Bollywood box office collections. In his WAVES 2025 session, Aamir Khan criticized the current business model of Bollywood movies, particularly the eight-week gap between theatrical and OTT releases. In his opinion, this business model does not make people go to watch films in cinemas because they know that they will be able to watch them on streaming platforms a little while later.
“If I request you to buy a product, and you do not, then I will deliver it at your doorstep in eight weeks—why would you buy it? That is what we are doing with films. We are requesting viewers not to visit cinemas,” Aamir added.
He also noted that India is a price-sensitive country, and most people prefer waiting for the OTT release of a movie rather than paying for a theatre experience.
The Theatre vs. OTT Debate
Aamir Khan also mentioned the decline in the number of cinema halls in India. And added that Bollywood’s largest blockbusters have reached only 2% of the country’s population. He compared India’s 10,000 screens to the 40,000 in the U.S. and 90,000 in China, stating that the lack of theatres is a huge problem for the industry.
“We need more theaters in India. There are entire districts with not a single cinema hall. How can we expect films to perform well when people do not even get a chance to be exposed to them?” he questioned.
Aamir Khan raises practical points on Bollywood’s business model. The short theatrical window does seem to deter individuals from visiting cinema halls. Especially if they know that they would otherwise be able to view the film within a few weeks of its release.
However, OTT platforms have also leveled the playing field in terms of content so that small films. And independent producers are able to reach audiences all over the globe. While Bollywood has to restructure its theatrical approach, it also needs to embrace the digital change rather than resist it.
One solution could be lengthening the theatrical window to at least four to six months. Such that films remain longer exclusively in theaters before landing on streaming platforms. Ticket prices can also be reduced, and theater facilities can be expanded to draw more audience members.
Aamir Khan’s criticism of OTT’s impact on Bollywood is thought-provoking and brings forth the need for balance. While online streaming platforms have changed the way content is consumed. Bollywood must adjust its business model so that cinemas are a viable and thriving space for cinema lovers.
