Bollywood star Alia Bhatt attended the special screening of the 4K version of the 1981 classic film ‘Umrao Jaan’ as a tribute to the legendary actress Rekha. Alia arrived at the premiere event in Rekha’s iconic pink saree look from Yash Chopra’s ‘Silsila’.

‘Umrao Jaan’, which has been restored by the National Film Development Corporation-National Film Archive of India. The movie has been re-released in theatres on June 27. Set in the backdrop of Lucknow, the film depicts the life of Rekha’s character Amiran and also features Farooq Sheikh, Raj Babbar and Naseeruddin Shah.

Break down of Alia Bhatt’ look

Alia’s look was created by stylist Rhea Kapoor. The light pink saree, feather earrings, dewy makeup, and loose hair were reminiscent of Rekha’s character Chandini in ‘Silsila’. Rhea Kapoor shared pictures of Rekha’s original look on her Instagram story and revealed that Alia Bhatt was modeled after Rekha’s classic look from the film.

Fashion critic Diet Sabya called Alia’s look a “reference done right” and praised her imitation of Rekha’s iconic look. At the same time, Rekha, who arrived at the same premiere, dazzled in an ivory and gold outfit. Aamir Khan, Tabu, Janhvi Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, A.R. Rahman, Hema Malini, Asha Bhosle and others also attended the event.

The moments of Rekha hugging Tabu and dancing with Anil Kapoor went viral on social media. “Umrao Jaan is not just my performance, it is a character that lives inside me. For the new generation to watch this film again is like opening an old love letter,” Rekha said about the film’s re-release.
