Anurag Kashyap Apologizes for Insulting Comment: “Abuse me”

Award winning filmmaker Anurag Kashyap apologizes as he was in the midst of a firestorm controversy lately because of his comments against Brahmins. All this started when Anurag Kashyap responded to one of his Facebook commenters by one such comment which offended many. His “I will urinate on Brahmins. any problem?” comment went viral and, subsequently, there was an outcry taken up by Brahmin organisations and negative criticism began pouring in.

Anurag Kashyap Apologizes:

In response to the backlash, Kashyap posted a public apology in the form of an explanatory Instagram post. He claimed that his statement had been misquoted and apologized for the unintended consequences. Kashyap asserted that his words were not meant to instill hatred but yielded to the hurt inflicted by them.

“This is my apology, not for my post, but for that one line which was taken out of context and bred hate,” he wrote. Kashyap also asked his critics to direct their anger against him alone, and encouraged them to spare their loved ones and families from threats and abuse.

Anurag Kashyap Appeal to the community:

Addressing the Brahmin society, Kashyap asked them to reflect on their values and protect women from assault. “Not only Manusmriti, but even shastras preach decency,” he asked people to decide what they need to be as Brahmins.

The row came in tandem with the heated row over Kashyap’s film Phule, a biopic of social reformers Jyotiba and Savitribai Phule. The Akhil Bharatiya Brahmin Samaj were among the community members who lodged a complaint against the film, objecting that it depicted the community in a bad light. Phule was postponed to 25 April after proposals for cuts by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for the sake of making room for these complaints.

Despite Kashyap’s apology attempting to placate people, the episode directs us towards the challenge of finding a balance between artistic freedom and cultural sensitivity. As controversy continues to rage, it reminds us of how dialogue and respect are necessary to handle contentious issues.
