Complaint Filed Against Ranveer Singh for ‘Hurting Religious Sentiments’

Complaint Filed Against Ranveer Singh: Bollywood star Ranveer Singh is perhaps in for another bout with controversy with an advocate from Bengaluru having filed a complaint with the police alleging that the actor insulted a sacred cultural tradition of the Tulu community. The complaint, lodged with the High Grounds Police Station, states that the actor made fun of a venerated ritual in a public performance.

What actually triggered this complaint?

The whole issue dates back to Ranveer Singh’s closing ceremony act in Goa at the International Film Festival of India on Nov 28. During his act, the actor was said to have recreated acts resembling that of the daiva ritual, which is a spirit-worship tradition firmly implanted in coastal Karnataka, and prominently shown in the film Kantara.

Rather, the complainant alleges that Ranveer’s reverence was not artistic but caricature-like, distorting and mocking a sacred ritual.

Mockery of the Daiva Tradition

In his written application, Advocate Prashanth Methal, a Karnataka High Court advocate, stated that the actor’s performance was disrespectful to the Panjurli/Guliga Daiva; divine spirits revered by the Tulu-speaking community.

He alleged further that Ranveer called the daiva a “ghost,” a statement that according to him, was blasphemous and demonstrated a lack of understanding of the cultural significance of the tradition. The performance has since been widely circulated online, and it has reportedly injured the sentiments of the devotees, who consider the ritual to be sacred worship.

Request for Legal Action

The complaint calls upon the police to proceed against:

294-A IPC- Hurting religious sentiments

Stirring enmity between communities

Intentionally insulting religious belief

The advocate has demanded that an FIR be registered and that stringent action be taken to prevent any such future instances.

Police Response

The SHO of High Grounds Police Station has formally acknowledged receiving the complaint, and further action or inquiry will follow, depending on the findings and legal evaluation.
