The recent media frenzy surrounding Janhvi Kapoor and her alleged hiring of an international paparazzi is new. In fact, Janhvi is not really known outside of India except for going to the odd party. The question is, why all of this attention? Did she not want attention? The critics argue, if she wanted to have privacy, choosing London as the destination of all places is some what suspect.
Fans and critics have drawn comparisons to some of the overseas celebrities that merit far more attention than Janhvi, namely — Khan and Kohli, ambassadors of celebrity status. We argue that even though these two are known in the entertainment world, there are very few incidents of the media frenzy that occurs any time either packs their bags or avoid the clear publicity that comes with their travels; both just disappear into their private life as any other citizen does in a world that doesn’t require grace when one becomes a global icon, icon or celebrity, attention or not.
It appears that the press is off on a goat chase with Janhvi acquiring considerable media puppet shows when she has yet to have a big box office report of any success. People have mentioned that this also makes the current media hype a bit questionable, and some may argue it is a copy-cat journalism method adopted from Western celebrity media maneuvers, especially the Kardashians.
On the other hand, according to many social media users, this is so outlandishly ridiculous. And social media users absolutely mock and lambast these whimsicality ‘methods’; to which it begs the question, what are these newbie stars hoping to prove a media base for, when they have not yet created a firm global name for themselves through film. Plus, netizens are too easily point out that the average viewer knows too well these tricks of the trade, so the kinds of ploys ultimately backfire.
While Janhvi Kapoor is a hot topic with the media, it also raises the question of where the border between real fame and manufactured publicity is. Well-established stars are free to travel internationally, while actors attempting to create an established career at an international level, such as Janhvi, are subject to extreme levels of scrutiny. The outcome of this little debate leads us to a larger question of privacy, publicity, and appropriate recognition in a world that is constantly obsessed with celebrity.
