Sourav Ganguly’s biopic: It is now definite that Rajkummar Rao, a formidable actor, would play the “Prince of Kolkata” in the much-anticipated biopic about cricketing legend Sourav Ganguly.
“Now that Dada has announced it, I can say it too, yes, I’m playing him in the biopic,” Rajkummar Rao said in a recent interview, ending months of rumors.
Rajkummar, who is well-known for his powerful, life-changing performances, acknowledged that the character carries “a lot of responsibility,” but he was excited about the challenge. “I’m anxious, but it will be a lot of fun,” he continued.

Rajkummar Rao believes his wife, actress Patralekhaa, gives him a unique edge in portraying Sourav Ganguly, thanks to her Bengali roots. He revealed that he has been learning the language and feels confident about delivering an authentic Bengali accent on screen. Sourav Ganguly has expressed satisfaction with the casting. “I think the right person is doing it,” said the former Team India captain. “I’ll assist him in every way.” He also confirmed that the film will go on floors in January 2026 and hit theatres in December 2026.

Luv Films will produce the untitled biopic, which will be helmed by renowned director Vikramaditya Motwane. Ganguly’s amazing journey from the backstreets of Kolkata to the international cricket arena, where he amassed over 18,500 runs and guided India to multiple historic triumphs, will be chronicled in the movie. Rajkummar Rao, who has made an impression in the past with characters like Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh in Omerta, Srikanth Bolla in Srikanth, and Shahid Azmi in Shahid, is playing another real-life character.
