₹60 Cr Deposit Needed Before Abroad Travel: HC to Shilpa-Kundra

Shilpa-Kundra Case: On Wednesday, the Bombay High Court declared that it would consider actor Shilpa Shetty and her husband Raj Kundra’s appeal to travel overseas only if they deposited ₹60 crore, the sum at issue in a cheating case against them. On August 14, police at Mumbai’s Juhu station charged Shetty and Kundra with defrauding 60-year-old businessman Deepak Kothari of around ₹60 crore in a loan-cum-investment transaction.

Last month, the couple petitioned the High Court to suspend the Look Out Circular (LOC) against them so they could travel abroad for work and leisure. Kothari filed the case, claiming that the pair had deceived him into investing ₹60 crore in Best Deal TV Pvt Ltd between 2015 and 2023, but had instead used the money for their personal gain.

No Vacations in Fraud & Cheating Case:

On Wednesday, the bench of Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar and Justice Gautam Ankhad ruled that it cannot allow Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra to go on vacations while facing charges of fraud and cheating. The couple’s attorney told the court that only one trip to Phuket was for leisure, and that all other excursions were for work. The attorney added that the couple has cooperated with the investigation and appeared for questioning.

High Court Response for Vacation Request:

The top court then clarified that it had not arrested Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra because they cooperated. The bench also requested a copy of the invitation or any other correspondence for the business gatherings Shetty was required to attend. The HC added that it would consider their plea only after they deposited the full ₹60 crore. The bench stated, “Deposit the entire amount of ₹60 crore, then we will consider the plea,” and scheduled a follow-up hearing for October 14. In their petition, the couple asked the court to suspend the LOC from October 2025 to January 2026.
