Following a short break from acting after Laal Singh Chaddha, Aamir Khan is back in the cinema halls with Sitare Zameen Par. Although the movie released to good opening, the million-dollar question on everyone’s mind is that, Can it make money? With a big budget and high expectations, the figures are in the limelight.
As per industry estimates, Sitare Zameen Par was produced on a budget of approximately ₹75–80 crore. This goes towards production costs, cast salaries, promotion, and distribution. Aamir Khan, a producer known for high production standards and emotive storytelling, hasn’t cut corners. But this also implies that the film has to gross well over ₹80 crore in order to reach the profit zone.
Box Office Performance So Far
The movie has been able to earn more than ₹70 crore within five days at the Indian box office. It had a good opening weekend and has been earning consistently through the weekdays. If it keeps this trend going, it is almost sure to cross ₹100 crore in the second week.
Satellite, OTT, and Music Rights Enhanced.
The movie should earn a good amount from satellite and digital rights, apart from its theatrical revenues. Reportedly, OTT platforms have shown interest in acquiring the film, and music rights have also been a revenue stream. These additional streams could help the movie reach profitability before the end of its theatrical run.
If Sitare Zameen Par grossing over ₹100 gross and another ₹25–30 crore from non-theatrical rights, Aamir Khan and the production company should be making good profit. The film is rated highly for being emotional and meaningful as well as acclaimed by critics and building strong word-of-mouth—all of which usually translate to long theatrical legs.
