Sunny Deol’s Jaat controversy went viral when Randeep Hooda has made its way into the news. After the film ‘Jaat’ was released on April 10. In one particular scene in the film, Randeep Hooda’s character is seen standing under a crucifix in a church when other individuals are praying. The scene has been condemned by the Christian world who aired that the scene was disrespectful to them. The allegations are that the scene involves intimidation and disrespect of Jesus Christ.
The producers issued a formal apology after being cornered on the offending scene. They stated, “It was not our intention to offend anyone’s religious sentiments. We regret this deeply and have taken immediate steps to delete the scene from the film. We apologize sincerely to all those whose faith has been offended.” The offending scene has been deleted from the film with effect from immediately.
FIR against cast and crew
The matter escalated a notch higher with the members of the Christian community filing an FIR in the police in Jalandhar, requesting a ban on the film. FIR had been filed under Section 299 of the Indian Justice Code (BNS) against Sunny Deol, Randeep Hooda, director Gopichand Malineni and producers, which pertains to acts done with the intent to cause harm.
Despite the scandal, Jatt has also created a stir for action and strong performances. Gopichand Malineni-directed movie boasts a power-packed cast of Vineet Kumar Singh, Saiyami Kher, Regina Cassandra, Ayesha Khan and Urvashi Rautela.
The quick action taken by the producers in revising the scene and issuing an apology has tempered the temperatures, but the incident highlights the necessity to exercise care when working on creative storytelling. As ‘Jaat’ continues making news, it acts as a reminder to the filmmakers of the need to balance artistic imagination with different beliefs and sentiments.
