Indian Horror Movies: Many horror movies have emerged from Indian cinema, but those based on real-life events often strike a more chilling tone. These movies enhance the terror, whether motivated by folklore stories, personal experiences, or confirmed paranormal events, by their genuineness. Five Indian horror movies based on fact follow here.

1. Real Events Encountered by the Director Inspire Romancham.
Although encased in comedy, Romancham is motivated by the actual experiences of director Jithu Madhavan and his friends. The narrative follows a group of single men who experiment with an Ouija board, which causes odd and inexplicable events at their Bengaluru apartment. The grounded storytelling and believable characters of the movie cause the supernatural components to seem unexpectedly credible.

2. Raat: Inspired by Disturbing Incidents in a Mumbai Home
Often said to be inspired by actual reports of paranormal activity in an old apartment complex is Ram Gopal Varma’s Raat. Like the subdued nature of actual haunting stories, the movie creates suspense via quiet, shadows, and mood instead of using startling jump scares.

3. Bhoot: Drawn From Haunted High-Rise Apartment Reports
Inspired by several claimed occurrences of haunted flats in Mumbai, Bhoot is also directed by RGV. With Urmila Matondkar’s passionate performance, the film’s claustrophobic scene perfectly conveys the horror of existing in a place where reality seems twisted.

Stree derives its central narrative from the Karnataka urban mythology of a roaming female spirit. To keep the spirit away, families once inscribed “Nale Ba,” (“Come Tomorrow”) on their doors. The movie turns this terrifying legend into a compelling yet eerie story.

5. Inspired by Tales of a Haunted Mansion in Shimla in 1920.
Vikram Bhatt’s 1920 draws inspiration from stories about an abandoned colonial mansion reputed to be the site of inexplicable events. Long-circulated narratives of paranormal phenomena are echoed by the gloomy setting and possession sequences.

These films show that on screen, the most memorable horror experiences may be produced from true stories, humorous, mysterious, or terrifying.
