Actress Nehal Vadoliya has made a public allegation of sexual assault against veteran Direct Subhash Ghai. In a conversation with Galatta India, Vadoliya detailed a January 2021 incident in which she went, along with her then-boyfriend (who was working with Ghai), to Ghai’s house. Vadoliya claimed that Ghai made advances toward her without invitation. She alleged that he even attempted to kiss her. Vadoliya stated it was “shocking” and “not okay.”
Subhash Ghai asserts that he denies all allegations vehemently by saying they are “false and misleading.” He stated that his legal team is well prepared to take any action against false claims. Ghai further mentioned that any genuine grievances should be fought through the proper and legal ways and not through the social media news ways, saying that real avenues matter in such instances.
Nehal Vadoliya is one of the emerging actresses in India in films and television and regional cinema. She has worked in a few independent productions. However, she is well known for her frank interviews on the openness with which she talks about the struggles faced by newcomers in Bollywood. Her further public statement adds to the ongoing debate on workplace conduct and accountability that is becoming commonplace in the film industry.
For once, the matter is expected to drag through sectors other than just Bollywood. This background of knowing where women stand within the industry, what social media has done to boost such agape voices, and the mention of legal experts makes the necessity for the courts or formal grievance mechanisms. Attention, as always, is given to the accuser and the accused, where fans and insiders within the industry watch closely.
As it shapes up, it once again brings home the imperative of safe spaces in Bollywood workplaces and how time-honored it is to support victims and ensure due process.
